About

Alaa Tartir, PhD. is a Post-Doctoral Researcher and lecturer at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland. Tartir is a recipient of the Swiss Government Academic Excellence Scholarship, and is affiliated with the Graduate Institute’s Centre on Conflict, Development, and Peacebuilding (CCDP) and the Department of Anthropology and Sociology of Development. Since 2012, Tartir is the Program Director of Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. He is a contributing member to The Political Economy Project of the Arab Studies Institute, George Mason University, and a member of the Palestinian Strategic Thinking Group.

Amongst other positions, Tartir has previously been a PhD researcher in International Development Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Guest Teacher at the LSE’s Department of International History teaching the Arab-Israeli Conflict, as well as a Visiting Scholar at Utrecht University’s Department of History and Art History, The Netherlands. He also served as a Senior Research Associate and Fellow at Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS). Additionally, he served as a researcher and project coordinator at the LSE’s Justice and Security Reseach Programme, and the LSE’s Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit.

Tartir is a recipient of a number of awards and fellowships as the Leonard Woltjer Stichting (LWS) visiting scholar award, the LSE’s Scholarship for Global Politics, The Palestinian American Research Center (PARC) Research Fellowship, and The LSE Middle East Center’s Emirates PhD Award. Tartir presented his work and organized panels in top international, regional, and local academic conferences. He also writes op-eds and opinion pieces regularly appeared at the New York Times, Le Monde, Foreign Policy, Al-Jazeera, Huffington Post, Open Democracy and many others. His publications appeared in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, and other languages.

Tartir earned his BSc. in Accounting and Finance from Birzeit University (Palestine), MSc. in International Development: Development Finance from the University of Manchester, U.K., and his PhD in International Development Studies from London School of Economics (LSE).

Tartir’s fields of interests include: Political Economy of Development and International Aid, Geopolitics and Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, State-Building and Governance in Conflict-Affected Areas, Security Sector Reform and Securitised Development, Public Policy Analysis, Political Economy of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Palestinian Politics, and the Arab-Israeli Conflict.
